Field Notes

Description:

Cap. Red with semi-glossy-to-matte, moist, sticky surface; approximately 8 cm diameter.
Pore surface yellow; 1 to 2 angular pores/mm; with a narrow sterile margin.
Stem. Yellow with reticulated surface and reddish tinge under the surface.; approximately 18 cm long.

Habitat:

Growing in pine leaf litter in a pine/deciduous woods.

Notes:

Sadly, when I had to move a branch to get to the mushroom, the branch snapped back and broke the cap off the mushroom. This did, however, allow a good look at the red pigmentation under the reticulate surface of the stem.
Could be mistaken for Ornate-stalked Bolete (Retiboletus ornatipes) which fruited a little earlier in this location. Cap of Heimioporus betula is darker red-orange with glossy, moist surface compared with yellow cap of Retiboletus ornatipes. Stalk of Heimioporus betula has pink-red color under the surface yellow reticulation; no red color under yellow reticulation on stalk of Retiboletus ornatipes.
