Field Notes

Description:

Several small black mushrooms, including one iwth partially white stalk. One individual was collected and measured, as follows:
Cap: black, bell-shaped with central dimple, leathery texture–or shriveled–12 mm diameter. Stem: equal but tapering, 40 mm long, 3 mm diameter at the base tapering to 2 mm at the cap. Gills: brown, attached, close.

Habitat:

Suburban neighborhood on mesic, tropical, insular lowland plateau.

Notes:

Spotted in my backyard, emerging from leaf litter. In appearance they are similar to some inky caps, however they seemed to wilt after about a day, rather than deliquesce.

After about two weeks, three more mushrooms emerged at the original spotting site. Once again no deliquescing was observed. Three additional images have been uploaded. One individual seemed to have a “mature” cap, and was collected. Data for this individual are: Cap: flat to slightly sunken, non-circular, 27 × 23 mm, dark gray, ribbed, margin uneven. Stem: bent, base white, upper length light gray, 55 mm long, including bend, club-shaped (tapering), flat (non circular cross section) 3 mm x 1 mm. Gills: attached, descending, close, light gray with maybe a hint of light pink.
