Great-tailed grackle
Quiscalus mexicanus
29.5669, -94.3935
Field Notes
Description:
The great-tailed grackle has a very long tail and is black with a purple sheen in the sunlight. I was greatly confused as to whether this was a boat-tailed grackle or a great-tailed grackle. But the "Peterson Field Guide to Birds" indicates that the boat-tailed grackle has a more rounded head and this great-tailed grackle does not.
Habitat:
There is a large flock of these birds near our campsite in High Island, Texas. They have an unusual whistle.
