Field Notes

Description:

The male is black with yellow markings and orange and black spot on the inner margin of hindwings (Palamedes Swallowtail is otherwise very similar, above, but has no black center in the orange spot). Females are black with blue patches on the hindwings, which is a mimic of the Pipevine swallowtail. Some females have a little yellow on the dorsal side of their wings. Wingspan 8-11 cm

Habitat:

Spotted on coneflowers at the Botanical Gardens of the Ozarks in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
