Field Notes

Description:

Tropical Tent-web spider belongs to Araneidae family, or Orb-web spiders, but does not construct the same type of web. This spider's web is all constructed from the same silk, it's not sticky, and all cells in the net appear rectangular. The female (pictured) is black with white spots, spots are localised in deep furrows on the edge of abdomen. Female's body is some 1 to 1,2 (1,5?????) cm long. Male, not seen, is much smaller and much more discreet.

Habitat:

Seen on local cemetery, with her net woven on palm leaves, well exposed to sun. Cemetery is located in pine forest near the coast.

Notes:

I wonder what this white ball of silk is: hatchlings? prey? or something different?
