Field Notes

Description:

The Gulf fritillary is the only member of genus Agraulis. Easily recognized by the elongated silvery spots against an orange background on the underside of wings. The upper-side of wings is seen in pic 2. This spotting is the 85th butterfly species I was able to photograph and document on P.N. from a recent trip to LRGV. The extended summer weather and little wind certainly contributed in my efforts to explore the Lower Rio Grande Valley.

Habitat:

Spotted feeding on lantana at the Falcon Lake State Park butterfly garden.
