Description:
Elongated abdomen and robust thorax, covered with thick hair, length about 2.5 cm, black to grey in colour with light bands below abdomen, stout, spiny legs and three ocelli on the top of the head between their two large compound eyes.
Habitat:
Spotted during a day walk at Kebun Raya Cibodas, a 80ha area above 1.400 metres high, mix of botanical park with big trees & palms and surrounded by rainforest at the foot of Gene volcano, Java - Indonesia.
Notes:
The Asilidae are a family in the order Diptera, the true flies. The name "robber flies" reflects their notoriously aggressive predatory habits, they may deliver intensely painful bites if handled incautiously; They feed mainly or exclusively on other insects and as a rule they wait in ambush and catch their prey in flight.
