Field Notes

Description:

Argiope luzona (Walckenaer, 1841). This is the spider which was the subject of two previous spottings. The first was part of a series about Satabilimenta - https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/1959573199 and the second was to show how Argiope spiders will kill and eat prey much larger than themselves - https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/695573113. I often check back on orb-weaving spiders that I have previously spotted, to see how they are doing (they tend to stay in the same place for long periods and often for life). This morning I saw an egg sac near the main web and attached to it by some silk strands. Then I saw another, slightly further away, but also attached to the main web by strands of silk. I intend to visit the web daily, from now until, hopefully, I will be able to photograph the hatchlings when they emerge. I have observed Argiope luzona hatchlings a few times and there are usually hundreds of baby spiders. I have given the egg sacs numbers so that I can refer to them as and when the babies appear.

Habitat:

This spider has been living on its web on the Mango Tree for at least seven weeks since I first posted a spotting featuring it with its stabilimentum.
