Field Notes

Description:

A striking looking moth with deep yellow drapes for wings with black waves. At rest it overlapped gathered wings. Approximately 30mm long.

Habitat:

Attracted by porch lights at night in back yard surrounded by mixed eucy and pine forest.

Notes:

Tigrioides alterna (Walker, 1854) Thanks bayucca for ID. Most are almost white. Is yellow a sexual dimorphism? Common name of "Tiger moth" is ridiculous as the are many others also called that.

Thanks bayucca. I'm curious how the colour varies. Most in googleimages seem to be white to cream colour but mine (and a few others) was very deep yellow. Maybe sex dimorphism? It' also a pity about the 'common name' - it's so common and therefore so misleading...
Erebidae, Arctiinae, Lithosiini, Tigrioides sp. and most probably Tigrioides alterna. http://www.flickr.com/photos/40582725@N08/7092024613 http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/arct/alterna.html
