Description:

The Woolly Bear caterpillar is about 2 inches long and has 2 black stripes, along with one orange stripe. T It is the most known caterpillar in the United States. It is also a lot less helpless than you would think it is. As you can see in the second picture, it has pincers. It’s not as weak as you thought, right? Another way that the Woolly Bear can protect itself is that it can produce its own blood antifreeze, which is infused in is cells. In case you don’t know what that means, it means that it has a chemical that stops its blood from freezing in the winter. That is a good thing, because if it didn’t have that blood antifreeze, its blood would freeze and it would die like most other caterpillars in the winter. The Woolly Bear is known to eat mostly clovers, although it will also eat herbs, grass, weeds nettles, and dandelions. Another thing about it is that it will molt 6 times before it is grown to its full size. Woolly Bears mostly live on birch, sunflower, maple, and asters. Its full name is the Banded Woolly Bear, and its scientific name is Pyrrharctia isabella.

Habitat:

The woolly bear is found across North America and in many cold regions.
