Description:

Crocothemis erythraea is a species of dragonfly belonging to darter family (Libellulidae), and its common names include broad scarlet, common scarlet-darter, scarlet darter and scarlet dragonfly. Pictured here is mature male, who has a bright red body, including the head and eyes. It reaches some 4,5 cm in body length, and shows somewhat flattened abdomen (photo 2). Immature individuals and females are yellowish brown with reddish eyes. All stages show yellow orange patch at the base of hind-wings.

Habitat:

Scarlet dragonfly is widespread and common throughout the Mediterranean region, and flies between May and September. Favours stagnant pools, even where the water is brackish. Here, seen on borders of lakes near Ploce, a set of seven lakes with independent (underground) water feeding system.
