Description:
Hoppers (mature and immature) with carer ants on a white Bauhinia plant. The hoppers moved around the stem ...obviously trying to hide..when they sensed my presence.
Habitat:
My garden.
Notes:
I think the ones with green abdomens are immature. The winged ones are mature hoppers. The ants really scrambled to protect them when I touched the branch and within moments a soldier ant also arrived!
Ants are known for their symbiotic relationships with other insects and even plants.
I just found out that treehoppers can signal when attacked...http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0960982208007409
maybe these hoppers did too.
