Field Notes

Description:

Butterfly wingspan approximately 7-8 cm wide. Upper surface of forewing is mostly black with white spots along margin and a lighter set angling forward from the sheen of bluish scales across the hindwings. Upper surface of hindwing has orange spot on costal margin.

Habitat:

In open area by shore of lake near a mixed pine/hardwood forest.

Thanks! I think this was a relatively 'young' butterfly - in really good shape. It kept flying and circling back to this spot so I just had to stay put and wait for the opportunity to get a shot. The challenge was that it was opening/closing its wings; the challenge was to get the 'open wing' shot.
