Field Notes

Habitat:

This Common Leopard was spotted in our backyard, visiting Globe amaranth (Gomphrena globosa L.).

Notes:

Nymphalidae; Nymphalinae; Heliconiini; Phalanta phalantha phalantha Drury, 1773. This is only the third time I have spotted this species since I joined Project Noah. The first was in July 11, 2023 and the second was just two weeks ago, Sep 7, 2024. So, up to that point in time, I could, perhaps, be forgiven for thinking it was a rare species, in this area. However, as you can see, our backyard was visited again today, by this beautiful butterfly. When it arrived, it went directly to the patch of Globe amaranth flowers, as it did last time. After a few minutes, it left and flew off into the distance. It would seem that the Globe amaranth is the attraction. So, we will have to plant a few more, to encourage the Common Leopard to become a regular visitor. My previous spottings are ; https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/1973217486..... and https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/981752130.....
