Field Notes

Description:

Like a small clump of debris on a stem, this small green lacewing larva was seen crawling along a plant stem. On it's slightly humped flattened body ( pic 2) with long bristles, it was carrying a collection of material probably, aphid integuments and food particles. The maxillae were curved like claspers (pic 1).

Habitat:

Spotted on a young eucalyptus tree at a reserve.

Notes:

The larvae uses the debris as camouflage.

aren't they interesting. I smile as I imagine myself chucking things on my back as shelter and walking around....Mark is obsessed about finding out how they get those things up there and some of the piles are quite high !
