Field Notes

Description:

Medium sandpiper, olive-brown upperparts, white underparts with bold black spots. Eyebrow is white. Wings have white stripes visible in flight. Tail is barred. Dull yellow legs. Low direct flight, wings flap in shallow arcs, producing clipped, stiff wing beats on drooping wings.

Too bad it is so blurry, but shorebirds are so hard to get sometimes! I love watching these on their breeding grounds in the summer. They nest on our lakes and when you are walking the shores or canoeing by, they always show themselves by calling and then flying away on stiff wings. Nice memory of summer camping and birding.
