Field Notes
Description:
A large bird, around 55cm with long legs & fat knees. It has a large yellow eye & a broad black eye patch with a white stripe above & below.Body is brown with a dark brown shoulder & white stripe above that.
Habitat:
Found on reefs, beaches & coastal mudflats. It feeds on crabs & other marine invertebrates. It is found along the northern coasts & islands of Australia. Human impacts on the Beach Stone-curlew include loss of habitat due to residential and industrial development, disturbance from beach-combing, boating and off-road vehicles. Other threats to the Beach Stone-curlew include predation by raptors, cats and dogs and nest destruction by feral pigs.
