Field Notes

Description:

Adenia hondala (Hondala) is a large perennial herb growing in the wet zone of Sri Lanka, which resembles common passion fruit plant. This close resemblance of the fruit to the passion fruit is partly responsible for the accidental poisoning among children.

Toxicity, which could be fatal, is due to a cyanogenic glycoside and a toxalbumin.
