Field Notes

Description:

The smallest of the American kingfishers. Males has a rufous belly and the female a green breast band. Juveniles lack both

Habitat:

In one of Tikal's mayan era reservoirs

Notes:

We watched the male for a long time and then he disappeared into the reeds and (we thought) flew back out. Looking at the photos, I see that it was a juvenile that darted out into a patch of tall grasses on an island in the middle.
