Description:
Coconut palms are under severe attack at this location. There are two types of damage. This spotting depicts damage by a borer, probably a (rhinoceros) beetle or (palm) weevil. The midrib of almost every frond becomes penetrated as shown. There is also a palm hopper species that inhabits the coconut trees at this location. Habitat:
Coconut palms (Cocos nucifera) in a large semi-urban yard & garden, next to a disturbed patch of remnant lowland forest.
Notes:
This insidious threat attacking our coconuts may be a rhinoceros beetle, most likely Oryctes rhinoceros (although there is also Scapanes australis). The planthopper that is all over the coconut trees is shown here http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/17092931
