Field Notes

Description:

Coconut palms are under severe attack at this location. There are two types of damage. This spotting depicts damage by a borer, probably a (rhinoceros) beetle or (palm) weevil. The midrib of almost every frond becomes penetrated as shown. There is also a palm hopper species that inhabits the coconut trees at this location. It is unclear what kind of damage is inflicted by the hopper. To see the second kind of insect damage see this spotting http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/18764039

Habitat:

Coconut palms (Cocos nucifera) in a large semi-urban yard & garden, next to a disturbed patch of remnant lowland forest.

Notes:

This insidious threat attacking our coconuts may be a rhinoceros beetle, most likely Oryctes rhinoceros (although there is also Scapanes australis). The planthopper that is all over the coconut trees is shown here http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/17092931
