Red-tailed Hawk (immature)
Buteo jamaicensis
33.1538, -97.0148
Field Notes
Description:
Red-tailed Hawks are large hawks with typical Buteo proportions: very broad, rounded wings and a short, wide tail. Most Red-tailed Hawks are rich brown above and pale below, with a streaked belly and, on the wing underside, a dark bar between shoulder and wrist. The tail is usually pale below and cinnamon-red above, though in young birds it’s brown and banded. Immature birds are duller, more streaked, and light brown tail with some dark barring.
Habitat:
Shore of Lake Lewisville. Movement of it flying into the tree caught my attention.
Notes:
This species is quite variable in colour, especially in the western U.S., where blackish individuals occur; these often retain a rusty or reddish tail. One of the most diagnostic field marks is the "cumberbund"; an area on the middle breast that is usually streaked darker than the rest of the underbody. Krider's Hawk (subspecies krideri) is a pink-tailed type from the great plains.
