Cedar-apple rust
Gymnosporangium juniperi-virginianae
37.4037, -77.7003
Field Notes
Description:
This fungus has a complex life cycle that alternates between growing on apple trees (or related trees) and cedar (usually eastern red cedar). By the middle of spring, there should be orange horns sticking out of each nodule. These horns will release spores for the next step in they life cycle. I'll post pictures if I catch it with horns.
