Field Notes

Description:

It measures between 24 to 28 cm, and weighs between 80 and 90g. The plumage as a whole, is completely black except for a light gray eye ring. The bill is long, straight and sharp in ivory. The eyes are reddish brown in color. Gray legs. The male and female have similar plumage.

Habitat:

This bird was photographed in a flood area known as "Pantanal" located in the state of Mato Grosso - Brazil. In general, it is a bird that lives in forests, lowland forests, wetlands and savanna. The picture was taken during a photo safari in the region aboard boats with expert guides.

It is found also in southwestern Venezuela (Tachira, Apure) south and east of Colombia (Meta), eastern Ecuador and Peru, Brazil, Bolivia, Chaco of Paraguay, northern and eastern Argentina (South of Santiago del Estero, Santa Fe and Buenos Aires) and West of Uruguay (locally on the Uruguay River region).
