Field Notes

Notes:

This goanna came and visited our campsite at Poverty Point in the Great Sandy National Park. It crawled onto a branch right over my head and sat there staring at me! The third shot is taken from a different spot - it moved onto another tree nearby.

Thank you Maria, EnvUnlimited and Leanne! : )
Thanks Shea and Toshimi. : )
I love how the name so accurately represents what the little guy looks like!
When I grew up it was supposed that there were none south of the Murray river border. They are seen here now, mainly near bushland campsites where they get to hunt for 'easy food' Mine was not tame at all but did wait for me to find my zoom lens.
Thanks Martin, he's ever so elegant! : ) They are fairly common here. The ones around the campsites in Great Sandy National Park get pretty brazen. This campsite is a bit remote, but the goannas were still curious. I didn't realise they are scarce in Victoria.
What a brilliant photo Shanna. I can imagine this yellow lizard with a black lace shawl in a Jane Austin movie. They are scarce in Victoria but I did see a wild one in Sydney. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/16916500
