Field Notes

Description:

This family is also known as casque-headed frogs. This one I am guessing is T. venulosus but am not certain. It is a medium sized frog about 75mm sv length. Skin is very granular over the whole body. Colour is grey/green on the dorsal surface fading to pale on flanks and white on the ventral surface. There appear to be no other defining marks on this specimen. Toes pads are broad and bright green and the lower jaw line is white.

Habitat:

Found in rainforest along the banks ot Rio Madre De Dios near Manu in eastern Peru. Sitting up in foliage about 1.5m above the ground and either this or another frog nearby had been calling.

Notes:

There are 14 species in the genus Trachycephalus. These frogs are called Casque-headed Frogs. They use their boney heads to seal off the entrances of the tree holes they hide in.
If anyone is able to confirm the species I am more than happy to update this spotting accordingly.
