Field Notes

Description:

A well rounded black beetle about 3 mm long with shiny, bristly elytra and thorax. Antennae were clubbed (probably the last 3 segments). Could not see the legs clearly.

Habitat:

Spotted very actively looking over this leaf on an Acacia. ( Cardinia Resevoir Park)

Notes:

The pronotum is said to have two longitudinal grooves - difficult to see. ID needs confirmation so, would greatly appreciate any help with this. Thanks.

Hi Leuba, Endomychidae are a really diverse family - however, have not seen one yet with this short antennae! I assume, this is a Lady beetle (Coccinellidae). This family is immediately related to Endomychids, and several (especially in the tropics) are fungivores as well. Short antennae are the rule - as long as head's width, for the most.
