Description:
Fungus fruiting bodies occur individually or as confluent growths; hard crust-like structures, approximately 1 cm diameter; smooth when young and matte surface as they age. Growths look like of ‘drops of asphalt’ that have aged. Magnification of image shows ‘dimples’ on surface of the fruiting bodies that are the ostioles/openings to the fruiting bodies.
Last image (20150909) shows some of the opened fruiting bodies after they have released their spores.
Habitat:
Found on fallen hardwood branch in an open deciduous woods, with Snow Fungus (Tremella fuciformis).
Notes:
Annulohypoxylon sp. are required for the Snow Fungus (Tremella fuciformis) to fruit. Snow Fungus was fruiting on this log.
