Field Notes

Description:

This gull was only recently recognized as separate species in family Laridae. This is a large white gull with grey coat, black wing tips and bright yellow legs. The head is snow white, with yellow beak and eyes, and red eye-rings and red spot on beak. Immature birds show brown patterned coat (photo 6).

Habitat:

Observed on islands of Friouli, Marseille; Mediterranean environment, rocky terrain with little vegetation and no large mammals. These four little islands are home to a large colony of gulls (and some other sea birds), and their, rather densely populated, nesting ground. Their nests are only disturbed by some occasional jackdaws, and we observed couple of squabbles during our visit. Tourists also need to pay a lot of attention in order not to disturb them - nests are literally everywhere, and we had to be extremely careful to avoid coming too close to nests.
