Field Notes

Description:

Huge colourful spider in a massive web. Spider appears to be about 8-10cm long including legs. Very brightly coloured markings. Body is long. Legs are sort of striped. Web is quite yellow, very large, sort of loosely connected, but over a very wide span, sometimes 3-5 feet.

Habitat:

In Dar es Salaam have seen these spiders mostly very high up in large foliage trees like this Mango. Have seen them in Zanzibar, Tanga, Serengeti, in the wild and in urban environments, always in similar positions, never down low and usually the spider is sitting in the middle of the web. Some times have seen two of three webs close together with different spiders, which is very scary looking and can cover up half the tree.

Notes:

Very large intimidating looking spiders, and the web is amazing with these enormous guide lines that can be 5-6 feet long. This one was set up in the mango tree about 3-4 meters from the house, but her web spanned the entire space.
