Field Notes

Habitat:

This Flea Beetle was spotted in a rice field, when the crop was only one month old.

Notes:

At first,I could not be sure that this beetle was, unequivocally, from the genus Phyllotreta. There were plenty of photos displayed online which looked like my specimen, but each time I found what I thought was a good match (for example, P. undulata), the distribution was always wrong. So, I reached the point where I felt that I had to go with Phyllotreta sp. Then, it got worse. Most sources stated that Phyllotreta was present in Asia, but Philippines is in Southeast Asia. The closest I got, was the mention of Java, Indonesia in cabidigitallibrary.org. It began to look like the genus was wrong. So, I was about to settle for Chrysomelidae when I got lucky and found a research paper in which Phyllotreta is documented as present in Philippines.
