Field Notes

Description:

Medium sized Owl with long, dark, feathered tufts above center of head. Eye discs area rusty color.Dark eyebrows over discs. Gray V shape border brown center. Below beak is a gray round mustache. Brown and white mottled back and streak patterned chest and belly. Eyes are a yellow-orange. The images are not of one bird but from 10 to 15 Long eared owls roosting in the same pine tree.

Habitat:

Small valley of mixed woodland.

Notes:

These were spotted in hot springs resort.

As mentioned not sure if these are resident or migrating. If you plan to visit you can try calling the resort and see if they are still there.

This must have been so cool to see! I've only seen 1, wish he would have had some friends in the tree with him! Great photos too :)
One birder counted 15 LE Owls in this tree. I couldn't see them all, but I did count 10.
No Peppertrees here. These here preferred this lone Pine tree over the other trees nearby.
We spent so much time at the Annual Audobon bird count looking for these in Black Diamond mines. They usually live in the pepper trees.
