Description:

How to describe and Echidna :) He looks like a burnt stump from a distance, and then as you get closer you realise it is wriggling around. And if you are lucky to get quite close you can see his big body some 40-50cm long in a big adult, covered in dark spines with light tips. His head has a dark brown fur and a long naked nose. And if you watch long enough you will see his long pink tongue zip out and grab some ants. They have quite sturdy feet also with long claws on them, for digging out the stumps and termite mounds. Their first reaction if they see you is to hunker down and hide their head under their spines for protection. If you wait quietly he will eventually open up again and carry on what he was doing or he might waddle of in that characteristic side to side walk.

Habitat:

This one was seen in an open woodland in Westerfolds park (bush reserve) in Melbourne, Australia
