The New Zealand Wood Pigeon (Kereru - native Maori name)
Quite a large native pigeon (maybe 30cm high) of beautiful colours.
Habitat:
Native New Zealand bush, eats buds and flower and berries of native New Zealand bush. When the winter is hard often found in rural and urban gardens.
Notes:
A beautiful shy bird, colours vary according to the light it seems. Sometimes quite subdued mauve and other times quite a certain emerald green and all the shades in between. Often seen playing in the air currents and doing 'loop de loops' 360 degree glides. Makes a very certain 'swoop swoop swoop' sound when they fly close by.
