Field Notes

Description:

A very beautiful silky orange flower with the charming name of Globemallow. This is a native desert wildflower of the southwest deserts. It can also be pink or red. It has the interesting distinction of being the last flower specimen collected by Meriwether Lewis on the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition. The Smithsonian still has this original specimen! The leaves are palmately lobed and this plant can live as long as 35 years. Family Malvaceae.

Habitat:

Lower W Rim Trail, Zion National Park, Utah.

Notes:

Native American Indians chewed the leaves to form a poultice for wounds. It is drought resistant and a favorite foraging food for animals and insects. https://fizzynotions.wordpress.com/tag/orange/ http://www.fs.fed.us/database/feis/plants/forb/sphcoc/all.html
