Description:
Measures of 23 - 33 cm long and weighs from 120 to 180 g. It has a large white eyebrow stripe against black head and back of the neck, long and thin. The throat and neck rest are white with a black stripe side. The back is brown with yellowish gray belly. They are sexually dimorphic birds, the male and the female have different physical characteristics. In the male and juvenile birds, the beak is yellow with black top board, the female is reddish. The adult female is different from male individuals and young individuals to possess an orange brown cheek, staining that is accentuated in the breeding period, while in males or young individuals cheek is white. The male has a unique anatomical feature in the world of birds. It has a cavity beneath each wing, where the newborn pups are born during the first weeks of life. They swim and dive very well.
Habitat:
Can be found in rivers and lakes taken by flooded vegetation in the Pantanal and Amazon in Brazil. Seek swim near the vegetation from the banks, soon taking refuge under the bushes and branches at the first sign of danger. They are very fast when they move away swimming, costumando leave the neck stretched and near water. Sleep on the antlers on the water and dive there if they are disturbed.
