Field Notes

Description:

Another Hoopoe spotting at the farms. This time I managed to get closer than I ever have of this cool bird. In these images you can see the Hoopoe making use of that long beak, used to prod in the dirt for insects.

Habitat:

Because the Hoopoe has very simple habitat requirements it is a widespread species, and is fairly common around this part of the world.

Notes:

I find the final picture funny, where the crown is getting rough treatment from some dry grass.

Ups - last sentence should read 'almost ALL of my recent semi close-up shots are taken from inside a car or behind a window'
Thank you Telse & Despina :D @Despina - after being in Qatar for a while with some really dedicated bird photographers I have learnt that photographing birds on foot (outside) is nearly impossible as they will flee before you get close enough. A tip is to stay in a car as they will allow you to come a lot closer. It took some getting used to for me, but it really works! Almost none of my recent semi close-up shots are taken from inside a car or behind a window.
wonderful shots! I have a pair coming every day in my back garden, but they're so shy, they fly away every time I try to snap some pics :(
Thank you @Janelle @Stefania @Mayra! :)
Thank you very much Jakubko! More and more I am realising that photographing birds from a car window is much more effective than being on the ground (unless in a hide). They let you get incredibly close.
Thank you very much guys :) Although I seem to see these guys more and more often I still get REALLY excited when I do.
There's another bird I'd love to see! Nice.
Thank you Ali :)
