Lion Beetle
Ulochaetes leoninus
36.0224, -118.378
Field Notes
Description:
Female Lion Beetle (Longhorn Beetle sp.)
Length: Approximately 2. 5 inches
Habitat:
Mixed Sequoia and conifer forest, elevation 6000+ feet
Notes:
Was laying eggs in a dead stump. Seen laying eggs for approximately an hour before flying off.
Appeared to be a Batesian mimic (although I haven't found any articles or sources that I can verify this with) - appeared remarkably similar to a bumblebee, esp. from a distance, and even had a display where it raised its abdomen in a threatening wasp-like gesture as seen in photo 3.
