Field Notes

Description:

Adults are dark grey to black, juveniles are lighter grey (pic 3). Sexes are alike in appearance with males being larger. A white bill and red eyes. Their main diet is aquatic vegetation. Part of a flock of about 22 birds (pic 5).

Habitat:

Spotted foraging at the Arcata Marsh and Bird Sanctuary.

Notes:

Coots are related to rails (Family: Rallidae).
