A robber fly with it's morning meal eating a young katydid.

The Asilidae are the robber fly family. They are powerfully built, bristly flies with short, sharp, stout sucking mouth parts. Wikipedia

Thanks everyone for helping me identify this....really didn't know the difference.
This is not a dragonfly nor a katydid. Young dragonflies are wingless aquatic nymphs. This is rather a Robber Fly of some sort. something similar to these: http://bugguide.net/node/view/67268 While the prey is a bug perhaps a kind of stink bug like these: http://bugguide.net/node/view/9058 note the overall shape, straw like mouth part, and leg arrangement.

Nice photo, Diana, but this is not a dragonfly, but a robber fly (family Asilidae).
