Description:

Appear as large patches of "dirt" on the snow. When you bend over and take a closer look, you can see them moving -- appearing and disappearing -- as they quickly jump around.

Habitat:

On the forest floor, mostly around the trunks of oak trees.

Yes they are a kind of springtail. We have been seeing them more often this winter than any other. Maybe because we have had more snow cover and milder temps?
Are they a kind of thrip or springtails? That's a cool sight!
