Field Notes

Description:

Stinkhorns are fungi that are smelly. They begin as egglike structures and then expand and a stalk or a number of arms emerge. This columned stinkhorn is reddish with four columns fused at the top. They are supposed to be smelly but this one is not, at least I did not get close enough to it to tell.

Habitat:

They are found in gardens and lawns. This particular fungi was spotted right next to our campsite under a bush in High Island, Texas. It is very small and almost did not notice it.
