Field Notes

Notes:

Barnacle Geese are rare North American visitors, with breeding populations in Greenland and other places in the north Atlantic Arctic. Wintering grounds are mostly Scotland, Ireland and the Hebrides. This one showed up yesterday at Maple Farm Sanctuary in Mendon. It was with the flock of wild Canada Geese that come in to feed on cracked corn the farmer puts out. The viewing was far better than I had expected, and at times I actually had to back up to get the entire bird in the picture frame.

Jellis, there was a lot of luck with this bird, from the private landowner reporting the bird and letting anyone come onto their property to see it to the bird being so cooperative. It's nice when things fall into place like this, it's usually a lot less predictable.
Thanks Ajenjonadita. They are cute little geese.
Thanks Patty. I hope you see one some time.
Delightful series Tom! I had never seen this artic geese, they are lovely =)
Thanks Ashley. They are small, just like a Cackling Goose.
Love the second photo with it in comparison to the Canadas! Jealous you got to see this, they are such pretty geese :)
