Field Notes

Description:

The widow underwing (Catocala vidua) is a moth of the family Erebidae.The wingspan is 70–80 mm. Adults are on wing from August to October. There is one generation per year. Mostly shades of gray with black and brown markings making a fantastic camouflage against tree barks.

Habitat:

Spotted on a tree in a mostly hardwood forest in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Notes:

It is found from southern Ontario, into Maine, New Hampshire and Connecticut, south at least to Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama, west to Texas and Oklahoma, and north to Wisconsin.
