Field Notes

Description:

Red bug with a black stripe across the middle & black spots at both ends

Habitat:

On milkweed

Notes:

They were found on milkweed that had lots of yellow aphids so I thought they were eating them, but I understanding that they feed on the seeds of the milkweed plant and the adults will also occasionally feed on plant juices or nectar. Identified by Charlie Moore

Comments (1)

Even though they are found around aphids a lot, this insect does not feed on them. Large Milkweed Bugs, like yours here, feed on the seeds of the milkweed plant. The adults will also occasionally feed on plant juices or nectar. http://bugguide.net/node/view/504
