Field Notes

Description:

Branched annual forb in the daisy family. Flowers have 4 to 5 white florets surrounding numerous yellow disc florets. Fruits are stiff black rods with two, heavily barbed awns at one end.

Habitat:

An abundant weed of disturbed areas.

Notes:

While a troublesome weed, seeds stick to everything, It is used as food and medicine in many parts of the world. Leaves eaten in east Africa. Known as michicha.

An important plant for pollinators. Right now these flowers are thick with numerous flies, bees, wasps, moths and butterflies.

Is becoming a perennial in this area.

Also known as Hairy Beggar Ticks.
