Field Notes

Description:

A very damaged Painted lady. V. cardui is a big butterfly, 5-9 cm wingspan. The upperside is orange-brown with darker wing bases. The forewing has a black apex patch and a white bar on the leading edge. The hindwing has a submarginal row of 5 small black spots which sometimes has blue scales. The underside has a black, brown, and gray pattern with 4 small submarginal eyespots.

Habitat:

Alpine meadow. Parque Nacional de Sierra de Guadarrama. Peñalara
