A few others have mentioned or questioned the same thing... and I believe you're right. Thanks again for your help.
There may even be a hint of the red banding in your image.
Looking at the length of the hairs on your caterpillar, as well as the fact that it is solid black, I suggest that this may actually be a Giant Leopard Moth caterpillar. :-) Here is a nice comparison: http://bugguide.net/node/view/349913
