Field Notes

Description:

This great-tailed brown colored grackle is a female. She is somewhat smaller than the male. She also has an unusual whistle which I kept hearing and could not figure out what bird was doing it until I actually saw a large flock of them in a tree and realized the whistle was coming from them.

Habitat:

There is a large flock of these great-tailed grackles, both male and female, in our campground at High Island, Texas. I'm used to seeing the common grackle in Maryland and they do not whistle.
