Field Notes

Description:

Feeding behaviour. Large dragonfly, body black and yellow rings. Adults are approximately 8 centimetres (3.1 in) in body length with a 10 centimetres (3.9 in) wingspan. Green eyes touching on the top. Black occipital triangle differentiates it from similar Cordulegaster boltonii

Habitat:

Nearby a mountain spring, in deciduous forest, with lots of Fagus sylvatica.

Notes:

While hikeing in an upland area I saw this goldenring flying by with a large insect in it's grasp. I watched until she found a proper spot to lunch. I could tell then that the large female caught what appeared to be an ichneumonid wasp, probably Protichneumon pisorius, can't tell with absolute certainty. I took many photos while it was chewing on it as she didn't seem to mind my presence at all while I was getting very close.
