Field Notes

Description:

A spiky, soft, green outer shell with a smooth, hard, brown, nut-like center

Notes:

I came across these strange things today. They came from the trees and once they hit the ground, they cracked open and revealed a smooth nut-like center. Does anyone know what these are?

Species ID Suggestions

Horse chestnut

Aesculus hippocastanum

Comments (2)

They're poisonous, too, which is why you see them totally abandoned by squirrels...
